Department Overview 

 

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction of the Davidson County Schools will support schools as they rigorously challenge all students to achieve their academic potential.  Curriculum and Instruction supports evidence-based instructional practices and strategies for differentiated, innovative, and effective teaching and learning based on the State-adopted standards in support of a balanced curriculum for the whole child.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction empowers and equips educators by providing effective professional development, coaching support, and modeling.  As a result, our teachers are prepared to effectively engage and challenge all students.  Our mission is to lead and serve the district by helping teachers teach and learners learn.

We carry out this mission by:

  • Providing targeted professional development
  • Supporting and facilitating PLC teams
  • Building relationships and ensuring rigor and relevance within instruction
  • Creating partnerships with schools
  • Modeling research based pedagogical practices and resources
  • Promoting the belief that all students can learn and advocating for students
  • Facilitating the use of data to drive instruction
  • Providing social and emotional supports to students
  • Providing a common instructional framework

Curriculum & Instruction Primary Focus

Davidson County Schools provides a high quality and innovative instructional setting that ensures all students are prepared for today’s globally competitive environment.

Major responsibilities of the department include:

Maintain and revise the Pre-K–12 curriculum to ensure alignment with North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study, including Common Core Standards and the North Carolina Essential Standards in the following areas:

  • Arts Education
  • Career and Technical Education
  • Health and Physical Education
  • English, History/Social Studies, and Foreign Language (Humanities)
  • Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC)
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) 
 
 
       
 

Provide direct support for instructional services that meet the needs of students through:

  • Advanced Studies
  • Pre-Kindergarten Programs
  • Remedial Education
  • Response to Instruction and Intervention
  • Virtual Learning
 

Support the design and delivery of customized learning experiences for students through:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
  • North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) 
   
       
 

Provide direct support for schools to facilitate effective implementation of:

  • Davidson County Schools' K-12 curriculum alignment 2.0
  • Provide a framework for continuous achievement
  • Create and deliver professional learning that ensures fidelity of curriculum and research-based instructional strategies application across all schools
